Living History Event at Crich Tramway Village

Published on Wednesday 12 June 2024

Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd June herald a new event at Crich Tramway Village, home to the National Tramway Museum at Crich, Derbyshire.

Past Times Living History Weekend brings history alive from several periods and is a real time travellers’ day out.

The Ferrers Household take you back to the 15th century with the forge, the pole lathe, pewter casting, calligraphy, cooking, carpentry, archery with fletching and bowyer (making arrows and bows), ferrets, children’s games from the period and medieval armour, which the public can access to dress up, hold and take photos. Children can also join in battle drills.

Back to the Victorian period at the bandstand with Music Hall shows, parlour games with Queen Victoria and a visit from the Temperence League.

Mid-twentieth Century in the Village part of the museum will give a glimpse into a day in the life of tram drivers and conductors, Punch and Judy and an opportunity to learn the Charleston and have a go with toys from the past. Also visit Harnett’s Household Goods, a shop display that will take you down memory lane.

Candi Bell, Events Manager, said:

“This is the first time we have included a multi-period focus in a single event, and we believe there will be something for everyone to enjoy a fun learning experience and that for some, it will evoke memories from their childhood. As usual our vintage trams will be running from 10.30am.”

A recent survey conducted by Trainline has highlighted significant gaps in historical knowledge among British adults. The survey, which included 1,000 participants, revealed some startling findings about the awareness of key historical events. The survey's findings suggest a considerable portion of the adult population lacks basic historical knowledge. This event could help to ignite interest in different periods of history.

Pre-booking for the event is not necessary, and previous visitors with return tickets can use them.
