Nelsons And The Nightingales: Law Firm Nominates Derby Hospitals As Its Charity Of The Year
LEADING Derby law firm Nelsons has announced its nominated charities for the coming year.
Each year the law firm supports three charities local to its offices in Derby, Leicester and Nottingham, and this year, employees at the Derby office, based in Sterne House on Lodge Lane, chose the Nightingale Macmillan Unit (Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity).
The Nightingale Macmillan Unit is a 20-bed specialist palliative care unit that provides care to patients with advanced progressive and life-limiting illness, including patients with cancer and non-malignant diseases such as motor neurone disease and end-stage organ failure.
Based at the Royal Derby Hospital, the charity offers a wide range of services to patients and their families including complementary therapy, palliative care counsellors and bereavement support services.
Donations raised for the charity will help to provide a better quality of life for patients, purchase equipment, fund palliative care and lymphoedema research, enhance the facilities and environment of the unit, and fund education for staff.
Stewart Vandermark, chief executive at Nelsons, said: “40 years ago this year, Nelsons had just been founded and was a small law firm that understood the importance of being active in the community and helping others. As we’ve grown, this has remained a central part of who we are, so the annual initiative is very important to all our staff.
“I am always proud of the support and enthusiasm from our staff, who actively get involved and think up new ideas to raise awareness and funds for such worthy causes. Last year, we managed to raise almost £8,000 across our three offices for our chosen charities, which we hope to surpass this year.”
Janet Sanders, charitable funds coordinator at the Nightingale Macmillan Unit, said: “The charitable funds raised for the unit are so appreciated as they enable us to give our patients and their families the best care possible. We are able to employ complementary therapists and provide all the products needed for them to help our patients, and this is a very important part of their treatments as it helps to support with stress, pain relief and general wellbeing.
“As our patients spend so much time in their rooms, additional funds will help us to furnish the rooms comfortably so they can spend precious time with their loved ones. We are in the process of creating a new day room where patients and relatives can enjoy a meal together as a family.
“With support from Nelsons and others, we are able to do so much more on the unit which will benefit our patients, including small gestures such as stocking their favourite food and drink, and celebrating special occasions.”
Nelsons’ other offices in Leicester and Nottingham have chosen to support the Leicestershire Action for Mental Health Product and Hayward House (Nottingham Hospitals Charity) respectively.
The combined efforts of the law firm’s three offices over the last financial year raised almost £8,000 shared between Me and Dee - which assists families where a member suffers from life-limiting health conditions - brain injury support charity, Headway Leicestershire, and international children’s charity, the Rosie May Foundation, which supports children in crisis around the globe.
