Emotional Visit to Crich Tramway Village by Former Tram Conductor
The visit to Crich Tramway Village on Tuesday 26th September was an emotional one for Dennis Roberts, who was keen to re-connect with Leeds trams which had a special reminder of his youth.
Dennis met his wife, Margaret in 1954 when he was a conductor on the Leeds trams and Margaret was a passenger, and the couple married in 1956.
Dennis’s family had asked whether there was a possibility of running a Leeds tram for his visit to the attraction in Derbyshire, and the staff and volunteers at Crich Tramway Village obliged by running two Leeds trams on the day, Leeds 180 and Leeds 399. Dennis also visited the depots to see Leeds 602 displayed.
Dennis and Margaret’s daughter, Christine Hemingbrough, said:
“My parents have been married for 67 years this year. Dad is 91 and Mum 90, sadly Mum has dementia and has been in a home since the start of Covid in March 2020. We visit her every week although she does not recognise us now.
“The visit brought back many happy memories for him of their early days of courting and the staff and volunteers were so kind to him giving him special treatment and making him feel so welcome. He enjoyed himself immensely.”
The season at Crich Tramway Village runs until Sunday 5th November 2023 and opening dates and times can be found on www.tramway.co.uk
