Say Yes To Employment And Training Opportunities For Young People In Derbyshire

Published on Tuesday 25 July 2023

A Youth Employment Support Hub (YES) initiative in Chesterfield run by Derbyshire County Council has been so successful that it will be continued and extended to offer more face-to-face help and county wide online support.

A Youth Employment Support Hub (YES) initiative in Chesterfield run by Derbyshire County Council has been so successful that it will be continued and extended to offer more face-to-face help and county wide online support.

The Chesterfield hub had a target to help at least 300 young people explore career and training options in its first year. This target was exceeded by over 50% as 484 youngsters benefited - taking steps towards employment, apprenticeships, volunteering or other training.

This success has led to the county council establishing a second Hub. Opened in mid-July it is based in Ilkeston at the Cotmanhay and Ilkeston Adult Community Education Centre on Bennerley Avenue for appointments and drop ins Monday to Wednesday. A service is also offered in Ilkeston library on Market Street on Thursdays by appointment only.

Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Clean Growth and Regeneration, Councillor Tony King said:

“The undoubted success of this service in supporting our young people makes it a natural progression to extend it further and help even more. I am delighted that we’re able to make this happen.

“Not only are these youngsters getting a foot on the ladder in terms of jobs and training, we’ve seen increases in their confidence, motivation and wellbeing too.

“I want to congratulate those who have worked with the service and hope that they thrive in their future careers”.

Both Hubs offer one-to-one appointments with advisers to explore career and training options in a friendly and relaxed environment. Those using the service are encouraged to create a careers action plan identifying their skills and aspirations. Advisers can also help with health and wellbeing support. Local youngsters can come along in person either for pre-booked appointments or on drop-in basis – except for Ilkeston library which is appointment only. Those from further afield in Derbyshire can go online for help.

The original Hub was set up in Chesterfield in early 2022 with funding from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) to support young people aged from 16 to 24. These Hubs were introduced by the DWP as a means of preventing the long-lasting negative impact of the COVID-19 on young people.
