There's Much Ado as outdoor theatre and cinema returns
Mark your calendars because the highly anticipated Outdoor Theatre and Cinema Season is returning to Markeaton Park this July. Presented by Derby LIVE and Derby Parks, this season guarantees a double dose of Shakespeare from the renowned Oddsocks Theatre and Derby Shakespeare Company. There will also be an interactive Pop-up Theatre for children and screenings of two award-winning films.
Enjoy the delightful settings of the eighteenth-century stable yard, with high walls and open space, providing an idyllic setting to enjoy the performances.
The festivities commence in the Craft Village with Children's Pop-up Theatre: The Magic Story Book on Saturday 1 July and Sunday 2 July at 11.30am and 1pm. Step into the enchanting Magic Story Book as our fairy, accompanied by mischievous puppets, breathes life into beloved tales. Prepare for lots of interaction, laughter, and unexpected surprises in this delightful show designed for the entire family.
Experience a mix of classic and contemporary fairy and folktales, engage in a fully interactive storytelling session, and top it off with a 15-minute 'meet the puppets' finale. Tickets are priced at £5 for adults, £4 for concessions, and infants in arms can attend for free.
Returning to Markeaton Park Craft Village, the award-winning Oddsocks Productions, based in Derbyshire, presents William Shakespeare’s romantic romp Much Ado About Nothing, infused with their signature hilarious and irreverent style. Set in the lush gardens of an Italian villa during the height of summer, this production blends Shakespeare with royal romcom.
Love fills the air as a respected prince plays Cupid for his friends, while a resentful younger prince schemes to rain on their parade. Catch this uproarious performance from Thursday 13 to Saturday 15 July at 7.30 pm, with tickets available for £18, and concessions priced at £16.
Derby Shakespeare Theatre Company, a local amateur troupe, will also grace Markeaton Park Craft Village with their unique take on Shakespeare's comedy classic, A Midsummer Night's Dream, on Wednesday 19 to Saturday 22 July at 7.30pm. Experience a captivating tale of love, mischief, and magic, expertly brought to life by this talented company. Tickets are available for £13.
Following the remarkable theatre productions, Markeaton Craft Village will transform into an outdoor cinema paradise. On Friday 28 July at 9pm, get ready for the hilarious blockbuster Bridesmaids (15+). Join Annie (Kristen Wiig) as she navigates the chaotic role of maid of honour in her best friend's wedding, leading her bridesmaids on an unforgettable adventure. Tickets are priced at £15.
For those craving high-flying action, join us on Saturday 29 July at 9pm for Top Gun: Maverick (12A), as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) trains a new generation of Top Gun graduates for an unprecedented mission. Experience the thrill of this adrenaline-pumping sequel that pushes the boundaries of aerial excitement. Tickets are available for £15.
Make the most of the 2023 Outdoor Theatre and Cinema Season by bringing your chair, packing a delicious picnic, and gathering your loved ones for an unparalleled experience.
Of course, no Outdoor Theatre and Cinema season would be complete without the delectable offerings from The Orangery, our on-site caterers. The Orangery will be serving speciality coffees, infusions, cakes, ice creams and refreshing cold drinks. Indulge your taste buds and enhance your experience with these delightful treats.
Tickets for the Outdoor Theatre and Cinema Season are now available from the Sales and Information Centre at 01332 255800 or online at derbylive.co.uk.
