Parents in Derbyshire encouraged to check eligibility for free school meals
Derbyshire County Council are encouraging parents of children aged 3 to 18 to check their eligibility for free school meals.
Families could save hundreds of pounds a year and parents can register now to check if they’re entitled. If eligible, pupils don’t have to have the meals every day and are offered the same food and sit in the same area to eat.
Parents can sign up to free school meals at any time of the year and the process is quick and easy.
To qualify, parents should be in receipt of:
- Universal Credit, provided they have an annual net earned income not exceeding £7,400 (£616.67 per month)
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- support under Part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- the guarantee element of State Pension Credit
- Child Tax Credit (provided you're not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190) as assessed by HMRC
- Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)
Councillor Alex Dale, DCC Cabinet Member for Education, said:
“If you’re eligible, free school meals are a great way to save some money and provide pupils with a nutritious hot meal. You can check if you’re entitled to a meal at any time during the year but we’re encouraging parents to do it at the start of the new term to get the maximum benefit.”
“It’s a very quick and easy online form and our team will be in touch within a week to let you know if you’re eligible.”
Find out more and check if you're eligible for free school meals or call the team on 01629 536481.
