Ironville And Codnor Park Youngsters Help Banish Bullies
Youngsters at Ironville and Codnor Park Primary School are helping to banish the bullies in a new initiative, launched with the help of the local police and businesses.
The school has launched an ‘Anti-Bullying Crew’, a group of pupils formed from representatives of every year group, who listen and look out for their peers and link in with teachers and the school council about any issues or ideas around the anti-bullying theme.
Youngsters from the ‘Anti-Bullying Crew’ each designed a logo for posters and high visibility jackets for them to wear during playtimes.
The winning design, by 11 year old Cain Bellamy, was selected by PCSO Meikel Miller of the Ironville and Riddings Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team and the logo was printed by Motifs at Ilkeston.
Teacher Sarah Curry, who set up the initiative alongside Mrs Thurman, the Chief Lunchtime Supervisor, said: “I’m pleased to be able to say that we don’t have any serious issues with bullying, and that is partly because we have worked hard to promote an anti-bullying message throughout the school.
“We feel it’s fantastic to have the support of the local police, who can link in with and work alongside us to help address any issues that might arise outside of school time.”
As part of the initiative, the youngsters have learned about what bullying is and follow the ‘STOP’ principle, which stands for Several Times On Purpose.
PCSO Miller of the Ironville and Riddings Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “The Anti-Bullying Crew provides pupils with support of their peers and teachers, but also aims to raise awareness and educate children about what bullying is and the hurtful effect it can have on others.
“Bullying can take place both inside and outside of school time and we’re pleased to be able to support an initiative that encourages local youngsters to look out for each other and take a stand against the issue.”
The youngsters raised money for their jackets through cake, toy and book sales and the cost of printing the winning design was covered by Motifs.
Lucy Hodgkinson, General Manager for Motifs at Ilkeston, said: “Our company are pleased to be able to support the local community, especially schools and initiatives with important messages such as this.”
