The ‘West Shed Experience’ is the home of The Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust. The purpose-built West Shed houses our collection of historic steam locomotives and railway coaches. The history of our exhibits is told through display boards, audio commentary domes, animatronic figures and a mini-cinema with short films to watch. Visitors can also view the active workshop where our locomotives are maintained from the safety of the viewing gallery above.
Admission free - open daily 10am-4.30pm.
The West Shed is located on the Swanwick Junction museum site of the Midland Railway Centre, Ripley, Derbyshire (The Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust is a separate organization from the Midland Railway Trust but access to the site is shared). Access to the Swanwick museum site, where the West Shed is located, is via heritage train from the Midland Railway’s Butterley Station, alighting at Swanwick station to walk up to the West Shed (approximately 5 minutes walk).
