Nether Heage
Categories: Local Information
Nether Heage (formerly Low Heage) is from the Angle Saxon 'Heegge' meaning high, lofty or sublime. The village lies between the towns of Belper and Ripley and close to the village of Ambergate. The original inhabitants would have been engaged in farming. There are still some family owned farms in the village today. The Grade II listed, six sailed, stone built, Heage Windmill situated in the village, is a landmark that is visible from miles around. The oldest building in the village is probably Heage Hall, now a farm. Parts of the Hall date back to 15th century and there are stories that the Hall was haunted by the wife of a former owner George Pole.
