The Friends of Belper River Gardens were formed in 2006, the centenary year of the gardens, to campaign to protect their future after they were threatened with closure. More history of the gardens will be included on our website shortly.
In 2008, Amber Valley Borough Council authorised the spend of £250,000 to rebuild the riverside promenade (saving it from collapse into the River Derwent) and to improve the services in the gardens. This work was completed in August 2009.
Also in 2008, the Friends achieved a major success when we won £58,000 in the ITV 'The Peoples Millions' show. This has been used to rebuild the Childrens' Play Area on a theme which reflects the story of the Derwent Valley.
The gardens have been a big attraction for local residents for over 100 years and are located within the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage site adjacent to Strutt's historic North Mill.
We organise regular 'Larks in the Park' concerts during the summer months, featuring local artists and folk groups. In addition, the gardens are currently used by Amber Valley Borough Council to stage Brass Band Concerts. (From 2011 all concerts have been organised by Belper Town Council whilst we have helped with stewarding)
We work with local schools on projects within the gardens - a current project is for school children to design, plant and maintain a flower bed in the gardens on a local theme. In addition we have regular working parties to maintain some of the flower beds and rockeries, so if you would like to help in beautiful surroundings, please our Chairman, Trevor Griffin on 01773 821920
