Police in Kilburn work to make roads around local schools safer

Published on Friday 22 May 2015

Officers in Kilburn are working alongside local schools to clamp down on congestion on the area’s roads and to promote safer, healthier and greener ways of getting to and from school.

The issue is one of the Kilburn Safer Neighbourhood team’s current priorities after it was raised as a concern by local residents.

PC Neil Hopwell and PCSO John Midgley have been working to alleviate the problem by increasing patrols around local schools at peak pick up and drop off times and working with school staff to encourage safe and responsible parking.

The team has also joined forces with partner agencies to help educate youngsters around road safety and give them training around alternative ways to travel to school including walking, cycling and scooting.

Officers visited Kilburn Junior School on Thursday, May 14 to host a scooter smart session. The training focused on areas including pavement courtesy and road safety with pupils being encouraged to lookout for obstacles and hazards such as wheelie bins and car doors opening onto the pavement.

They were also encouraged to think about how to behave around elderly pedestrians or those walking with dogs or prams, to ensure their own safety and that of other pavement users.

Students are also working alongside officers and teachers to develop a map to highlight different ways of getting to school.

PCSO Midgley said: “These sessions are having such a positive impact on local youngsters and their parents, carers and the wider community. More children are coming to school on scooters or walking which has improved the traffic problems on Highfield Road.

“We have a great working relationship with the school and we are pleased that the project has been so successful. It also ties in with fulfilling the team’s current neighbourhood policing priority, which will be good news for local people.”
