Countryfile picks Derby's peregrines

Published on Thursday 27 November 2014

Web cams that watch a pair of peregrines nesting on Derby Cathedral have been included among the top ten bird web cams in the UK by BBC TV’s Countryfile Magazine.

The Derby Cathedral Peregrine Project, managed by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, set the first cameras up in 2007 and since then they have had almost three million hits from over 70 countries around the world!

Nick Moyes, who set up and now maintains the cameras said “This is a great accolade for us. We know the close-up and intimate views of our birds as they go about the business of raising their family each summer are enjoyed and appreciated by many thousands of people, both locally and globally”.

There are now four cameras on the cathedral tower. Two look down on the nest platform, a third wide angled camera views the nest from behind and the fourth camera looks along a ledge above the nest, where the birds rest, feed and even mate.

Nick Brown, Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, added “As well as the web cams we run an interactive blog which allows viewers of the birds to post comments about what they see and also to ask questions. We even have school children asking us about the birds and reporting what they see during the summer term when there are eggs or chicks in the nest.”

Activity on the web cams will start up again in February when the pair start their courtship and nest making behaviour. Eggs are usually laid in late March or early April with chicks hatching out early in May.
The project is a partnership between Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, Derby Cathedral, Derby City Council (which hosts the web cams) and Cathedral Quarter.
