Appeal For Befrienders In Amber Valley
As it was once famously said “It’s good to talk”, but for those isolated members of society, good company can be hard to come by.
Amber Valley Centre for Voluntary Services (AVCVS), based on Ripley Market Place, have been running their befriending service for sixteen years, with an aim to provide the most socially isolated residents of Amber Valley with a friendly face and a listening ear.
AVCVS receive referrals weekly from professionals involved in someone’s care, for example a social worker, care worker, doctor or a family member.
They are launching an urgent appeal to residents in Amber Valley that would like to volunteer as a Befriender in the area where they live, to visit someone once a week for a chat and to help brighten a client’s day. As little as one hour of your time could make all the difference. We have a number of people in Amber Valley that are on a waiting list for a Befriender.
Kerry Smith, Befriending Project Worker at AVCVS said, ‘Being a befriender is all about spending quality time with individuals, chatting, and listening and having fun, brightening up someone’s day’. She added, ‘We offer training to potential befrienders. The course runs for just two hours a week for four weeks. The course is a small friendly informative group, no high pressure or any tests to pass, just lots of positive information and guidelines to help volunteers develop and fine tune their skills’.
If you are interested in becoming Befriender with Amber Valley CVS, please contact Kerry Smith on 01773 512706 or email kerrysmith@avcvs.org
