Warning over fraudulent calls from Derbyshire police
Derbyshire Constabulary has issued a warning about fraudulent calls from people claiming to be police officers.
The calls appear to have been made on the afternoon of 26 October using a “number spoofing” technique, which allows fraudsters to change the number displayed on the recipient’s phone.
None of the calls, from a number starting with 01773 and ending in 215, were made by Derbyshire police officers or staff.
The fraudsters claim to be police officers and tell victims that their details have been recovered as part of a criminal investigation. They then ask for personal details, including financial information.
Police officers will never call members of the public to ask for financial details such as bank account numbers, PINs or cryptocurrency information.
Anyone who receives such a call should hang up and avoid sharing any information over the phone.
The force is asking people not to call 101 or 999 to report these fraudulent calls. The volume of reports is causing unusually high waiting times, so anyone wishing to report a fraudulent call should use one of the following online methods:
- Website – Use the force’s online contact form.
- Facebook – Send a private message to the Derbyshire Constabulary Facebook page.
Information can also be provided anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or through the Crimestoppers website.
