Open for business - first tenants in as new chapter turns for town centre historic site
FIRST tenants have taken offices at a new business centre housed in a landmark building in Ilkeston town centre.
Erewash Business Centre, set in The Old Police Station on Wharncliffe Road, was opened last Autumn by local MP Maggie Throup in a fanfare celebration attended by local business leaders.
The 1906 red brick and stone building was latterly the headquarters of enterprise agency Erewash Partnership until 2014 when it moved to Bridge House on Derby Road, Long Eaton.
The building was then bought from Midlands Co-op by Simon Woods, chair of the partnership and managing director of TecQuipment, an education equipment manufacturer based in Long Eaton.
Erewash Partnership is now managing lettings at the building which underwent months of work, including new windows on three sides, replacement boiler and heating system, energy-efficient LED lighting, new carpets and redecoration.
One of the first tenants to have moved into the 16 offices is Lee Tabreham, trading as Essential Money Matters.
Lee, who lives in Ilkeston, gives advice on mortgages, equity release, life insurance and assurance, and income protection among other matters.
He has been in the business for 10 years working for other companies but recently branched out on his own, starting his new business in the new business centre, which he likes.
“I was impressed by the fact that the building had been renovated and refurbished to high standards and provides good office suites, meeting room, and a car park all in the town centre,” he said.
“It's a good location and handy for clients and potential customers.”
The Partnership has itself moved its town centre office from its own business centre at Castledine House on Heanor Road, back into its former headquarters, offering its varied programme of services to start-ups and established businesses.
A marketing campaign is now underway to attract new tenants on flexible terms.
Partnership chief executive Ian Viles said: “This is a new chapter for a historic building that has served Ilkeston for more than a century. It offers good facilities and is an ideal base for both start-up and existing businesses. Hopefully, it will bring new enterprise and jobs to the town centre.”
