Amber Valley Mini Olympians go to Glogow
Amber Valley’s Mini-Olympians are preparing for the trip of a lifetime.
The Mini Olympics has been running for over 10 years, and is based on partnership agreements with the local councils in Poland, Sweden and Amber Valley.
Teams of young leaders are selected from each country to travel and participate in a residential week where young people are submerged into the local cultures of the host country and participate in various physical and non-physical events and activities throughout the week.
This year’s event is taking place between 29thJune and 5th July in Glogow in Poland. A team of eight young people from Amber Valley will be flying out to the Polish town to join teams from Glogow, Laholm in Sweden and possibly one other country for mixed-nationality teams, taking part in activities such as sailing, swimming and paintballing.
When not competing they will get chance to take part in a variety of social, cultural and educational activities.
The young people were selected by the Amber Valley School Sports Partnership, which works with all of the schools in the Borough to improve sport opportunities for students. This opportunity is open to all students who attend Amber Valley schools. Students have to submit an application form and go through an interview process in order to get selected. Students from five schools in the Borough (Belper, Swanwick Hall, Alfreton Grange, Ecclesbourne, Heanor Gate) were chosen to take part.
Councillor Tony Holmes, Cabinet Member for Housing and Public Health at Amber Valley Borough Council said: “Since the Council became involved in organising the first Mini Olympics back in 2002, the event has gone from strength to strength. It is a fantastic opportunity for those taking part to learn about different cultures, develop new skills together and establish friendships with young people from other European countries. I hope the Amber Valley team have a fantastic trip to Poland and I’d like to wish them all the very best of luck.”
