U3As are self-help, self-managed lifelong learning co-operative for older people no longer in full-time work, providing opportunities for their members to share learning experiences in a wide range of interest groups and to pursue learning not for qualifications, but for fun.
Ripley and District U3A was founded early in 2009 and now has over 20 interest groups running. The interest groups to date are:-
Art Appreciation, Walking/Ambling, Computer Group, Dining Group, Local History, Painting and Drawing, Wine Appreciation, Theatre Visits, Reading Group, Genealogy, Quilting, Mah Jong, Gardening, Marquetry, Digital photography, Transport, Wild Flower, Creative Writing, Listening to Music, Shakespeare Sessions, French Conversation (3 Groups), National Trust and Museum Visits
We hold a Monthly Meeting which is usually the third Thursday of the month at St. Joseph’s Church Hall, Butterley Hill in Ripley at 2 p.m. We currently have around 215 members and our annual subscription is £15. Members receive national U3A magazines as well as our local newsletter and “What’s On” which is an information sheet indicating forthcoming activities and events.
The U3a approach to learning is – learning for pleasure. There is no accreditation or validation and there are no assessments or qualifications to be gained. All U3As are members of the Third Age Trust (a Registered Charity) which is their national support and advisory body. U3As have the following aims and guiding principles:-
- To encourage and enable older people no longer in full-time paid employment to help each other to share their knowledge, skills, interests and experience.
- To demonstrate the benefits and enjoyment to be gained and the new horizons to be discovered in learning throughout life.
- To celebrate the capabilities and potential of older people and their value to society.
- To make U3As accessible to all older people.
-
To encourage the establishment of U3As in every part of the country where conditions are suitable and to support and collaborate with them.
