This new group was established in December 2012 after several people regularly using the Greenway decided to get together to discuss ideas for improving the local environment for everyone to enjoy.
We liaise with Derbyshire County Council and Amber Valley Borough Council to ensure we are as effective as possible in our aim.
The group meets once a month in the evening at The Midland Hotel on Nottingham Road and all are welcome. The Agenda includes discussion of ideas, activity planning and feedback from members. Approximately up to 13 people attend the meetings. We are currently considering formalising the group with an appropriate constitution to enable us to apply for funding to expand the scope of the group.
So far, our activities have included producing posters on Dog fouling for the Greenway in an attempt to reduce the incidence of it on the Greenway; litter picking on Pit-top area; clearing and tidying the site of the former Ripley Railway Station and filling in the deep depression in front of the goal posts, ready for re-seeding. The appearance of the Greenway is much improved since the group started up.
Future plans include organising social events, planting wild flowers in some areas and negotiating with Environmental Services at AVBC to prevent spraying the path edge with weed-killer as it is unnecessary and creates more mess on the path. We will also be continuing our litter-picking and tidying activities as necessary.
