“WE CARE FOR CATS”

The Derby & District Branch of the nationwide charity known as Cats Protection was formed on 29th April 1968 and covers an area with a population of some 400,000.

Cat welfare work is a very large part of the Branch’s role and is carried out entirely by volunteers.  This includes transporting cats in their care to vets, answering telephone queries, fostering, fundraising, administration work etc and without these committed people, the Branch would not function and its aims and objectives would never be achieved.

A neutering voucher scheme run by the Branch can offer substantial financial help towards the cost of this operation for anyone on a low income and can be obtained either from the Charity Shop at 31 Wardwick, Derby, on production of proof of benefit, or by calling the Cat-Line on Derby 206956 daily between 9 am and 6 pm, or by visiting our website on www.derbydistrict.cats.org.uk    Charges are £10 for a female and £5 for a male and, during 2010 alone, we assisted in the neutering of some 1,300 cats.  A tremendous achievement.  Female cats can be spayed from 4 months and male cats can be neutered from 5 months.

As soon as the cats in our care are fit and healthy enough (both mentally and physically) for rehoming, they are transferred to the Cats Protection Headquarters Adoption Centre at Long Lane, Derbyshire.

However, whilst our volunteers have had great success at finding suitable homes for the many animals in our care, we find themselves with an ever growing problem of trying to find suitable homes for those cats which pose a challenge.   These are cats who, at the time of rescue, are not deemed to be ‘lap’ cats, ie they may have feral tendencies due to their past lifestyle or ill treatment.  Cats Protection believes that no cat is unhomeable – all each cat needs is a special home to suit its special needs – so we are always seeking the ideal environment for one (or more!) of these cats, such as farms, riding stables, garden centres, smallholdings in rural areas etc.  Houses with large gardens or those which back onto golf courses, woods etc would also be these cats’ idea of heaven!

In the first instance, the new owners would need to supply them with a safe, secure outhouse/shed/stable where they can be contained for about two to three weeks, with regular meals, a comfortable, warm bed and a litter tray.  After this period indoors to get used to their new surroundings, they can then be released, returning to the outhouse/shed only for their food and shelter.  They would then repay the new owner as fit and healthy vermin controllers.  Further info can be obtained by calling the Welfare Officer on the Cat-Line.

So how is the money raised to carry out this vital work?  The Branch is blessed with not one but two charity shops, one at 31 Wardwick, Derby, and the other at Institute Buildings, North End, Wirksworth, the income from which forms the cornerstone of the welfare work we are able to do.  Donations of quality used clothing, bric-a-brac etc are always welcome.  With the help of Cartridge World at Allenton, the shops also run a recycled ink cartridge scheme.  It’s free to do, reduces waste going to landfill and enables us to buy extra treats for the cats in our care.  The Branch currently has a membership of 380 members who receive every 3 months a copy of the DANDI, the Branch’s own Newsletter which keeps members up to date with what is happening locally, and a copy of the CAT magazine, the League’s colourful publication (if they chose to subscribe to it).   Membership costs £20 for the DANDI and the CAT or £9.50 for the DANDI alone.  We also have separate costs for family members and senior citizens.  Full details can be obtained from the Membership Secretary via the Cat-Line.

We also run a pen sponsorship scheme. The annual donation for sponsorship is £17.50 per pen but is reduced to £15 per pen for 3 or more pens. For this, you receive a welcome letter, quarterly copies of the DANDI (Derby & District newsletter) and quarterly copies of ‘Pen News’ which tells you about the cats currently being fostered and those who have been transferred for re-homing.  Photographs of the cats are also included when possible.  Pen sponsorship can be taken out as a gift such as a birthday or Christmas present or in memory of a loved one or a treasured pet.

The Branch intends to continue to expand and maintain its status as a caring concerned charity with an excellent record of achievement but this can only be achieved with the help and support of the Derby public who can help us achieve our aims by either becoming a member and/or becoming an active volunteer.
